Hi Lads,
I want to give you a quick outline of the work we're suggesting for the week ahead. This week we are going to mainly focus on Maths and your project on your locality. We will give you some questions on old maps and images to help think of ideas for your project. Your project may involve you getting out and about and visiting some of the local landmarks and maybe even taking a photo or two to add into your project. Please make sure you only travel within the allowed 5km, I don’t think the guards will accept the excuse “but my teacher said ...”! We would like you to submit your project on Donacarney / Mornington by the evening of MONDAY 18th of May.
We are going to continue with ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. I hope you are all enjoying it and learning from it. It’s important to remember that this novel is a work of fiction told from Bruno’s point of view. In the novel Bruno is quite an innocent child and doesn’t appear to know or understand what is happening to Shmuel, Pavil or the other Jewish prisoners. This may not have been typical of German children of Bruno’s age. By law he would have been a member of the ‘Hitler Youth’. In ‘Hitler Youth’ he would have been taught all of the Nazi ideology.
We also don’t learn much about Shmuel’s character, he seems very accepting of what has happened to him and his family. There is no evidence to say that most Jewish people were accepting. Would you be? Also it is unlikely that many children Shmuel’s age would have lived long in the camps, many were killed immediately in the gas chambers or were “experimented on” in the most horrible ways.
This novel is great for encouraging us to learn more about the horrors of the Second World War and the Holocaust. When we finish this novel and the great story in it, we must remember all of the 6 million people who died during the Holocaust.
Our biggest focus for the next two to three weeks is going to be on Maths. We’re going to try to move onto topics that will build on concepts you have already learned. We're going to try our best to explain this using video tutorials, some Ms. McBride and I will make and some from CJ Fallon. These chapters may be challenging but we feel it's important that we try and cover them. If you're stuck on anything, go back and watch the tutorials a few times or perhaps email us with your parents and we can try to help. We're going to be looking at fractions, decimals and percentages. We've already done lots of work on this and will be building on it. We're going to revise content on Monday - Wednesday to refresh things for you and then we'll move on from Thursday. I would recommend you using your calculator for the trickier parts throughout the next 2-3 weeks.
Please do not get stressed out if you do not get this. I'm sure your maths teacher next year will go back and cover this. We'll just give it our best shot. We really want you to focus on your Maths and get comfortable with the new concepts. As a result we will not be suggesting any Irish work for the next while. If any of you would like to have suggested Irish work we can email to you no problem.
Above all else at this time mind yourselves and your families. Take time to get out for a walk or a bit of exercise each day. Make sure you touch base with your friends regularly. Learn things that you don't usually learn in school e.g bake, cook, DIY etc. Be kind to each other. Nobody has ever been through anything like this before and everyone is trying their best. It doesn't mean you or I or your family will always get it right, but try and do things with the right intention and kindness at the heart of it. Try and live our school motto.
Ár ndícheall i gcónaí - Our best always :-)
