Your graduation video.... The final slideshow of memories.... Here is a old video slideshow we made in Senior Infants, we played it right before our Senior Infant show. Early next week we hope to upload the videos from last night's graduation onto the 6th class blogs. If you do NOT wish your child's picture to be included please email us before Mon 22nd of June and we will edit the videos .
Thanks There is a free online recording of the webinar 'Transitioning from Primary School to Post-Primary School' that ran through Navan Education Centre last week. The link is

Many of you may have attended the webinar that we suggested and will be familiar with some of what we will cover. The main thing is don't sweat about it! There's a bit of a deal being made of you guys going into secondary school and transitioning in the media. I know you will be at a slight disadvantage having missed out on school for the past few weeks BUT way back in November when we had parent-teacher meetings I told lots of your parents that you were already ready for secondary school! It won't matter that you missed out on some chapters in maths or history. Every year thousands of children go from 6th class to 1st year and I haven't heard of one child coming back to primary school! :-) Throughout this and every change you encounter try and reflect back, if you can, on our Empowering Beliefs. They can be really helpful to you going forward in your life. Some will be easier for you than others and that's okay. YOU WILL BE FINE! We hope to see you all on Thursday at 7:30 pm for your graduation. We will send you an email with the invitation / code on Wednesday morning. Best of luck in your last week of 6th class. Kindest regards & respect, Ms. Mullen There are four different things we want to cover with you and you could tackle one each day or whatever way you find most helpful for you. They are:
If when you've read through it all, you still have questions feel free to drop me an email and I'll see if I can find out the answer for you. Remember the only stupid question is the question not asked. The Basics Take a look first at the basics file attached below. It's got lots of the practical information and helpful points. There's a section at the bottom that looks at some differences too between Maths and English at primary and secondary level. However the first couple of pages are the most important.
Homework Homework will be a bit of a change next year. You're going to have more of it and some teachers may want things done different to others. You'll need to make sure it's all done in the correct copy and your name on it. Homework is very important as it helps you revise what you've learned and practise things. Knowing how to take homework down in your journal becomes even more important next year. Taking 5-10 seconds to write down details or work or materials needed in your journal could save you lots of time trying to figure it out or doing the wrong thing. I know in Coláiste na hInse they call their journal their "Cinn Lae" and one student who came back to visit us told me it's the most important book in his bag. The next file is about homework. It has pages taken from a book especially designed to help you with the changes in secondary school called Belonging Plus 2. Look at all the questions, especially those on the last page.
Timetables Take a look at the timetable file below and try and answer the questions. If you can work out your timetable it'll make your life so much easier. Your new timetable will have lots of information on it, not just the subject but also the teacher and the room.Maybe sit down and look at it with an older sibling or parent. I'd recommend having a few copies of your timetable in September and put one in the kitchen, another in your bedroom and of course one in your homework journal. Look at it the night before so you know where you'll be going and what you'll need to bring to school that day e.g. PE gear. This example timetable is taken from webinar slides by Gráinne Mulcahy. We have permission to share it with you.
Making Friends Making new friends or not being with old friends can be a worry for many of you. This change is a natural part of life. It's a great time to meet new people and make more friends. It may not happen straight away and that is okay. Talk to your parents or siblings about the friends that they made in secondary school. There will be lots of clubs or teams that you can join next year. They can be a great place to meet someone that you will have a common interest with. There are sports and non-sporty clubs, schools generally have something for everyone. Joining one or two is a great idea,it's okay if it turns out you don't like it, you're not signing up for life. Just give it a go! The file below has some great tips on making new friends and what to do if you fall out with them. Some of this you may want to read again next September or October but don't worry I'll keep it on the blog for any of you that want to read it again then. The file is made from webinar slides by Gráinne Mulcahy and we have permission to share it with you.
Here is a copy of all the slides from Gráinne Mulcahy's webinar on 'Transition to Second Level' if you would like to read through them.
Just a quick reminder that I'd love to read some of your reports or persuasive writing pieces on Chernobyl or nuclear energy. I've gotten some great pieces in already!
I hope you have all enjoyed active week and have kept busy. From looking at some of your activity charts I can see how active you have been! It's just a shame about the weather over the last day or two. Tips and advice on going to secondary school will be uploaded later today. This is the work we would like you to look at and tackle next week. If any of you have completed any other work or projects and would like to email them on I would love to read them and can give you feedback! |
